Personal Use

  • CrashPlan is free and for personal use only.
  • CrashPlan+ may be used for both personal and non-personal use.
  • CrashPlan Central is our online backup service that provides backup plans for personal use.

What do we mean by this?

Personal Use

Personal use means exactly that — using CrashPlan as an individual or family to back up personal files. You can choose whether you'd like to use the free, ad-supported CrashPlan or purchase a CrashPlan+ license for real-time, ad-free protection.

Examples of Personal Use

  • Backing up your family photos to your mom's computer
  • Setting up CrashPlan for your technologically challenged cousin Bob
  • Backing up your doctoral dissertation and other documents to CrashPlan Central

Non-Personal Use

Non-personal or business use means using CrashPlan products to protect files associated with a business, educational institution or non-profit or using CrashPlan products to help sell services. If you're doing these things, you fall under non-personal use and must use CrashPlan+ or CrashPlan PRO™, our enterprise version.

CrashPlan+ has real-time backup, stronger encryption and no ads. This means your customers' files or your critical business files receive the best protection and security with CrashPlan+.

Examples of Non-Personal Use

  • A consultant setting up CrashPlan for customers
  • A small business or non-profit organization
  • A research lab at a university
  • The friendly neighborhood whiz kid running a tech support business after school
  • Charging a fee for someone else to back up to you
  • Charging a fee to set up CrashPlan+ for someone else

CrashPlan PRO

If you're a consultant, service provider or a member of a non-profit or educational organization, then consider CrashPlan PRO. We offer non-profit and educational discounts on CrashPlan PRO licenses. Visit the CrashPlan PRO site for more information.
